The Family Proposal
The next day, when Walter called, a man answered the phone and gruffly told him that Emily was unavailable to come to the phone. The same happened the next day. And the next. Then the next few days were filled with training drills, which made Walter think that the actual combat would start sooner rather than later, though he still had no proof.
By the time he finally managed to get a message to her, it had been nearly a week since they had last seen each other. They agreed to meet in a park near her home where she often went to walk. There was a small fountain that continued to run even in the depth of winter. That was where they were to meet.
It had begun to rain when Emily arrived, but she insisted that they walk anyway. They made their way to a small gazebo where they could take shelter from the icy spray coming from the sky. They talked of trivial things, neither one ever mentioning the war. When it was time to bid her goodbye, Walter felt a pang of regret. He was almost certain now that he would be sent into combat soon enough.
This pattern continued over the next week, but then, one day, she said something that stopped him in his tracks. âPerhaps we could go to your place next week,â she said.
Walter hemmed and hawed as he tried to think of a way out of it. He had wanted to kiss her before she had suggested that. He knew that her father did not want her being courted by an American, and a few casual dates would enrage the man. Walter wasnât even sure if he wanted to get that deeply involved with her, either, but Emily kept finding ways to draw him in.
Now, Walter had a new worry to add to his list. That list seemed to grow longer with each passing day. He had to find a place that could be his for a few hours, somewhere he could bring a girl like Emily.
He asked some of his fellow soldiers, and it turned out that one captain had rented a set of rooms down the street from the barracks. Through some wheeling and dealing, Walter managed to find the guy in the canteen.
âHow much would you charge for me to rent your rooms for a couple of hours next Thursday?â Walter asked.
The man smirked at him, wiped his mouth on his sleeve, and said, âFifty bucks.â
Walter frowned, but nodded. âDeal.â
By the time he brought Emily there the next Thursday, Walter was wound into a ball of worry. âItâs charming,â she pronounced as she seated herself on a chair.
âUh, thanks,â Walter said as he sat down beside her. They made small talk, but all the while, Walter was wondering why she had wanted him to bring her here. He was too confused to ask, though, with his mind flying to the possible perils of combat every other second. The town had become busy, with trucks and tanks being loaded into ships.
